Who Was Anna M. McCabe?

In September, 1955 the town of Smithfield paid $14,000 for 12 acres of the Winsor Estate on Pleasant View Avenue.  The following year taxpayers approved a $375,000 bond to fund a new elementary school which the School Committee subsequently named "Pleasant View Elementary School."

In June, 1961 46-year veteran teacher Anna M. McCabe retired, having missed a total of 3 days work in nearly five decades (her absences included 1 day for her brother's funeral and 2 days for an illness).  The School Committee renamed the five year old elementary school in Miss McCabe's honor.  In 1964 the 12-room school was expanded to include an additional 8 classrooms and a library, resulting in the structure our children enjoy still today.
